What’s Food Day?
Have you heard of Food Day? The first ever Food Day is on October 24th, 2011. It’s similar to Earth Day, but focused on food and “eating real.”
- Reduce diet-related disease by promoting safe, healthy foods
- Support sustainable farms & limit subsidies to big agribusiness
- Expand access to food and alleviate hunger
- Protect the environment & animals by reforming factory farms
- Promote health by curbing junk-food marketing to kids
Here’s what some have to say about Food Day:
“Food day is an opportunity to celebrate real food and the movement rising to reform the American food system.” Michael Pollan, author
“Food Day is a national celebration of the very things that farmers markets help grow at the local level — relationships between healthy farms, healthy people, and healthy communities.” Stacy Miller, Executive Director, Farmers Market Coalition
As food people, we want to do our part too. We realize that diet-related disease can’t be cured in a day, nor will there be a solution to the hunger problem in this country overnight, but small steps do help. Starting on Monday, we’ll be celebrating Meatless Monday right here, every Monday, by offering you a meat-free recipe idea. We’ll also keep you up to date on Food Day as it gets closer, and we’ll give you more ideas for getting involved.
Are you planning or attending a Food Day event this year? Tell us about it!
